Renate Kobel Award

Renate Kobel Award

The Renate Kobel Award is a scholarship established by the Club designed to help members grow their skills as hike leaders and to encourage new leaders to join our community. It reflects our commitment to safety, education, and high‑quality leadership in the Catskills.

Through this award, the Club will reimburse 75% of the tuition for approved outdoor leadership or hiking‑skills courses, up to a maximum of $150. (Travel expenses are not included.) To be eligible for the award, hike leaders must lead four Club hikes within two years of completing their training.

Suitable training courses might include wilderness first aid, outdoor leadership training or off-trail navigation. If in doubt, please ask.

The following steps should be performed to qualify for an award:

  1. Email the Outings Chair

    • If you're not already a hike leader, determine your eligibility to become one

    • Verify that the training course is appropriate

  2. Register for the course

  3. Upon completion of the training, retain receipt and proof of successful completion.

  4. Lead at least 4 Club hikes within two years of completing the course, and submit hike waivers in a timely manner

  5. After leading at least 4 Club hikes, request reimbursement via the Outings Chair, providing:

    • Receipt for course

    • Proof of course completion

    • List of hikes led, matching the submitted hike waivers
