Bear Safety

How to avoid becoming bear food

Black bears are the largest native mammal in the Catskills region with a population estimated to be around 2,000. They can be found on all of the mountain ranges. Black bears are active from spring to late autumn and spend winters in dens. Generally bears do not bother hikers, however we recommend that you read the information provided below and learn how to avoid bears and what to do if you encounter a bear while hiking. The most important rule to remember is NEVER run from a bear, slowly back away instead.
